Pramod Muthalik, the kingpin of the Sri Ram Sena has announced (Excerpt from www.indiauncut.com):

Our activists will go around with a priest, a turmeric stub and a mangalsutra on February 14. If we come across couples being together in public and expressing their love, we will take them to the nearest temple and conduct their marriage.

There exists a second level of absurdity beyond the obvious - the tacit assumption that the couple in question would necessarily be Hindu.

I think all these hooliganism, whether it's religion or region has roots in economic issues. The bunch of youths who attacked pub were mostly from lower income levels. They just get an excuse in the name of religion to bash up the rich,Who burn thousands of rupees in one evening whereas, an ordinary factory worker has to slog for whole month to earn such an amount. That is the reason why Raj thackerays and muthalik's of this country get easy support from this section, which is very vast and disgruntled.Unless this economic disparity is corrected, it will keep happening. whatever laws or police force you have, u like it or not it will happen more and more.

Dear Anonymous,

What you say is absolutely correct. What is beyond me is the fact that demagogues like Bal Thackeray, Raj Thackeray and Muthalik exist and operate with impunity. It certainly is in the means of the state government to thrash the daylights out of them and put them behind bars but political complicity prevents them from doing so.

India is not unique to economic disparity, so let us not fool ourselves here.
